Position Summary

The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Assistant Director of Public Safety.

Full-time position to assist the Director of Public Safety in managing the University’s security, emergency dispatch, traffic and parking enforcement function.

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Assist the Director of Public Safety in a leadership role to provide protection, safety and security for the university.

  • Act as second-in-command of Public Safety.

  • Assist in managing and supervising the emergency dispatch, parking services, traffic regulation and enforcement.

  • Assist the Director of Public Safety to liaison and collaborate with University departments, area, state/federal law enforcement, public safety emergency responders responsible for law enforcement, Fire Service and other emergency response on campus, to include coordinated training, response protocols and emergency operational plans with those agencies.

  • Assist in scheduling off duty law enforcement and emergency responders for campus coverage and special events.

  • Assist in the planning and coordinating of campus safety and security programs.

  • Assist in developing the Public Safety budget.

  • Assist in the development of all Public Safety operating guidelines and training manuals.

  • Participate in evaluating, developing and training in University disaster and emergency management plans.

  • Assist in maintaining the required federal and state crime reports.

  • Review reports and documents generated by Public Safety and other departments as requested.

  • Assist in the retention of Public Safety records and dissemination of Public Information when requested.

  • Must have or ability to interpret, achieve a working knowledge of, and assure compliance with increasing complex federal and state regulations, including Title IX, VAWA, Clery and other security, fire related laws and regulations.

  • Assist in conducting background checks on university applicants that may have a previous felony or misdemeanor criminal history.

  • Assist in monitoring local law enforcement reports that may impact the campus community

  • Assist in selection and training of security, dispatch, and parking personnel in a higher education setting. This includes but is not limited to safety and security procedures, first aid, fire safety, the legal aspects of their responsibilities, and other duties.

  • May be called upon to direct appropriate emergency responses during campus emergencies such as fires, weather related events, or any other hazard that occurs at the University.

  • Provide information to students, faculty, staff, and the public regarding security and parking issues.

  • Assist in providing crime prevention programs and other related services for University community.

  • Work with the Risk management and other departments to identify and eliminate security and safety hazards on the campus.

  • Assist in the coordination, data entry, use of the software for card access of campus buildings and classrooms.

  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of public safety security devices, vehicles and equipment.

  • May be required to interact with the news media as an official representative of the University

  • Conduct employee performance evaluations.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree with five years’ experience with Law Enforcement, Fire Services or Emergency Medical Services (EMS). High school degree/ GED equivalent with ten years’ experience with Law Enforcement, Fire Services or Emergency Medical Services (EMS) will also be considered.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Strong organizational and administrative ability with excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking and presentation skills.

  • Knowledge of first responder procedures and response to emergency situations.

  • Excellent listening, observational and interview skills with strong social perceptiveness. Effective at resolving problems and conflicts.

  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse university community.

  • Refined judgment and decision-making skills, especially in emergency response situations.

  • Requires a significant degree of independence and decision making actions on a 24/7 basis.

  • Interpreting timely response to rapidly developing situations, emergencies and federal, state or local issues, which may affect the University community.

  • Ability to interpret, analyze information to make timely and critical decisions.

  • Possess the command experience to employ decision-making abilities to act independently without benefit of prior consultation with counsel.

  • Certified in CPR and first aid or ability to obtain certification.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Investigation experience.

  • Experience in higher education.

Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements

  • Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Required to work high profile or large events such as commencement and guest speakers.
  • On call availability to provide supervision and guidance to Public Safety staff in the field.
  • Availability to work nights/weekends/holidays as necessary.
  • Frequent irregular hours may be required.
  • Local, regional and state travel occasionally required.
  • Availability to travel for training associated with job requirements or knowledge advancement.
