Position Summary
The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Director of Development.
The Director of Development plans, manages, and directs development efforts in concert with USI Foundation goals and will collaborate with the appropriate personnel for various projects and events. The Director of Development also serves as a primary gift officer for major, leadership, and deferred gifts and reports directly to the Vice President for Development.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Achieve goals related to donor visits, invitations of support, and gifts made. Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a broad range of individuals and organizations.
- Generate major gift strategies and proposals that directly support the University's fundraising priorities.
- Develop and implement innovative strategies to identify and engage new donors.
- Serve as campaign manager for any capital and/or comprehensive campaign.
- Oversee the University's annual fundraising programs, prospect management, and database management.
- Support board members and other volunteers in fundraising strategy and gift invitation.
- Provide substantial assistance in directing the formal major and planned gifts program.
- Responsible for vetting fundraising proposals from the campus community.
- Oversee the funding request process and Foundation reporting to University colleges, departments and programs.
- Ensure best possible communication between the Development Office and other university units. Attend academic and community meetings and serve as the main liaison to a variety of University councils and boards, including Historic New Harmony Advisory Board and others upon request.
- Manage the Development Office, with special attention to staffing assignments.
- Formulate strategies and administer policies, processes and resources. Oversee the Development Office's budget.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Bachelor's degree.
- Minimum of five years of professional fundraising experience.
- Experience in cultivating donor-centered relationships and effectively managing a portfolio of prospects.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills with previous experience working independently and as a member of a development team.
- Knowledge of best practices in fundraising and capital/comprehensive campaigns.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
- Master’s degree or CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) credential.
- Experience in higher education development.
- Experience working with volunteers or foundation board to achieve fundraising goals.
- Working knowledge of Raiser's Edge or similar fundraising software.
- Previous supervisory experience.
Functional Requirements
- Remaining in a stationary position at a desk or work station for extended periods of time for the majority of assigned duties.
- Occasional physical access to meetings, presentations and events that occur at on-campus sites such as classrooms and meeting rooms, and at various sites throughout the local and regional community.
- Extensive physical activity with some events to oversee activities, to setup and make presentations, and to interact with attendees.
- The use of computers and computer systems (hardware and software) to set up functions, to enter data, to retrieve and process information and to create documents.
- Effective problem solving and the presentation of a professional demeanor while meeting deadlines and achieving critical outcomes, even under demanding conditions such as multiple priorities and short-notice deadlines.
- Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills, along with interpersonal communication skills appropriate to cultivating productive relationships.
Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements
- Standard office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Evenings and weekends are required to meet with donors or to attend special events.
- Frequent travel is required.
