Position Summary

The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Senior Library Assistant.

Assist in the daily operations of the University Archives and Special Collections (UASC) by processing materials; maintaining records and logs; preserving the collections; and providing assistance for researchers and visitors.

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Assist with processing and maintaining new and existing acquisitions and accessions, including University records; Regional History collections, Communal Studies collections, Manuscript collections, and print and digital media collections; while using archival methods for preservation and conservation.

  • Create and maintain finding aids, research guides, and tutorials for the unit.

  • Collect and maintain statistics and logs for reports of visitors, materials requested, and services rendered by the unit.

  • Assist Library Associate in providing materials, reference, and instructional services in the UASC by interpreting and responding to researchers and visitors in person, via telephone, e-mail, and fax communications. This includes assisting University students, faculty, and staff, as well as news media, visiting scholars, and the general public.

  • Assist Library Associate in developing and preparing presentations and exhibits for the unit and in support of various civic organizations in the area, using UASC material.

  • Assist in the digitization of the University records, Regional History collections, Communal Studies collections, Manuscript collections, as well as the media collections.

  • Transcribe oral history interviews and other audiotapes, including University events and speakers.

  • Create content featuring UASC collections, events, and promotions for the library’s social media presence. Maintain UASC display cases to promote selected collections or events, including researching ideas and topics for new displays, gathering materials, and assembly.

  • Serve on library and university committees.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Strong customer service skills required.

  • Must be able to effectively serve and communicate with a diverse group of individuals, particularly USI faculty, students, and staff.

  • Must be able to accurately interpret and explain policies to UASC users. Must be able to accurately interpret both written and verbal instructions.

  • Must be flexible and able to effectively manage change.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills are required.

  • Ability to work independently without frequent direct supervision is required. Must be self-motivated.

  • Working knowledge of computer software, scanners, and digital cameras. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications. Knowledge of library software systems.

  • Awareness of archival standards, the process for digitizing materials, cataloging standards, and library operations.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.

Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements

  • The UASC is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Regular schedule will be coordinated with other staff members in the unit.
  • Occasional extended hours, evenings, or weekends may be required.
