Position Summary
The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Senior Library Assistant.
Serve as the evening supervisor, coordinating the operations of the library, primarily attending to the Library Services counter, and providing excellent customer service to the library’s users. Clear the building and close the library five nights per week. The person in this position is expected to work some weekend hours on a regular basis.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Primary contact for Library Services in evening hours.
- Supervise student staff during evening shift for all checkout activity. Trains students who work during evening hours.
- Coordinates projects delegated to Checkout unit’s evening staff.
- Supports activities of the Rice Library Testing Center. Proctors tests and assists with required clerical support by following all authorized procedures and customer service functions required for successful test delivery and implementation.
- Assists patrons with loan and return of library materials; provide assistance to patrons using library resources such as printers, computers, and media equipment.
- Assist patrons in basic navigation of library website and online resources such as room reservations, catalog, university’s information systems and basic reference inquiries.
- Answer library, campus and community questions via phone, chat, or email, directing people to the correct individual, office, or building.
- Oversee routine security checks on the floors. Respond to door alarms, restroom alarms, and security system alarms. Assist in maintaining quiet and order in the library. Trained in emergency fire and weather procedures and active shooter scenarios. Keep the Circulation Manager informed of any issues that arise during the evening. Oversee evacuation of the building or sheltering in place in emergency situations.
- Assist with stack maintenance by inspecting collections for areas needing attention.
- Shares in backup coverage for full-time and student worker staffing when required.
- Assists as essential personnel when emergency situations arise, or if a campus closure is ordered during evening, night, or weekend business hours.
- Assists in the maintenance of physical space including resetting furniture and placement of informational signage.
- Serves on library or university committees.
- Other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge and Skills
- High school diploma.
- Skill in interpreting and generating written and oral instructions.
- Strong judgment and decision-making skills are required in order to prioritize tasks and judge when policies or procedures may be altered.
- Experience in effectively handling high pressure and emergency situations.
- Demonstrated adaptability and aptitude for coping with change.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- Experience in receiving and giving instructions on a variety of details is highly desired.
- Experience in supervising people of differing abilities and experience in an academic setting highly desired.
Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements
- Standard work hours are 2:00 pm – 10:00 PM Sunday – Thursday to equal a 37.5 hour per work week during academic year.
- Work hours will vary during summers and holidays.
- Occasional overtime and additional weekend hours may be required.
