Position Summary

Assist in the daily operations of the University Archives and Special Collections (UASC) by assisting in digitization projects, metadata, unit promotion; and providing assistance for researchers and visitors.

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Assist in the digitization of university records, regional, special, and communal studies collections, Manuscript collections, as well as the media collections including developing metadata for digital records.

  • Assist in social media and web presence for the unit by working with student assistants to develop engaging online material for blog and library websites.

  • Assist Library Associate in providing materials, reference, and instructional services in the UASC by interpreting and responding to researchers and visitors in person, via telephone, and e-mail. This includes assisting University students, faculty, and staff, as well as news media, visiting scholars, and the general public.

  • Assist University Archivist and Library Associate in using UASC materials to develop and prepare exhibits for the unit and in support of various civic organizations in the area, using UASC material.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Working knowledge of computer software, scanners, and digital cameras. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Power Point applications and Photoshop or other photo editing programs.

  • Strong customer service skills.

  • Must be able to effectively serve and communicate with a diverse group of individuals, particularly USI faculty, students, and staff.

  • Must be able to accurately interpret both written and verbal instructions.

  • Must be flexible and able to effectively manage change.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently without frequent direct supervision. Must be self-motivated.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of library software systems preferred.

  • Awareness of archival standards, the process for digitizing materials, cataloging standards, and library operations preferred.

Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements

  • This position is full time, 37.5 hours per week. Hours will be scheduled during the unit operating hours, 8:00 am – 6:00 pm Monday – Friday. Regular schedule will be coordinated with other staff members in the unit.
  • Occasional extended hours, evenings, or weekends may be required.
  • Some travel may be required.
