Position Summary

The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Senior Maintenance Mechanic (Painter).

Perform wide range of maintenance work, with a concentration in painting and drywall, in a multi-building complex under direct supervision of the Lead Maintenance Mechanic. Will plan, coordinate and carry out construction, maintenance, painting and equipment installations according to applicable codes and standards.

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Order materials needed, make installations and applications required for completion of drywall/painting projects while ensuring that the work conforms to codes.

  • Tend to the preventive maintenance and routine maintenance of the University's structures, equipment, furnishings and systems. Tend to various assignments for repair and rehabilitation projects.

  • Perform basic carpentry, electrical and plumbing tasks, and tasks related to maintenance, repair, rehabilitation and construction projects for buildings, equipment, furniture and systems.

  • Repair and/or install windows, doors, partitions, coiling components, floor tiles, cove base, stair treads, wall coverings and roofs.

  • Maintain inventory of painting components and supplies. Assist in maintaining building supplies, tools, equipment and spare parts.

  • Construct metal stud walls, install drywall, apply mud, tape and corner and edge trim, sand and finish to be ready for paint.

  • Prepare surface to accept paint including sanding, scraping, chip, washing, sand blasting, etc. as necessary.

  • Apply prime paint and finish paint to walls, ceilings, devices, fixtures, trim, poles, frames and surfaces (interior and exterior).

  • Remove and apply wall coverings. Install and repair wall trim pieces, floor edging and floor coverings.

  • Conduct work from work requests and projects as outlined under minimal supervision of the Lead Maintenance Mechanic and Maintenance Supervisor.

  • Move and assemble furniture, seats and other equipment.

  • Set up furniture and equipment for special and academic events.

  • Perform snow removal and paving work as required.

  • Estimate time for proposed projects.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • License (residential or commercial), master license, or certification (from a University approved source) in a minimum of one trade, plus one year related work experience. OR three years of related work experience in two or more trades.

  • Four years’ experience in journey level of a trade required.

  • Able to work independently and solve most problems without engaging another Senior Maintenance Mechanic or Lead Maintenance Mechanic.

  • On-the-job experience in the painting and carpentry trades, together with knowledge and skill in either using and applying paints, solvents, drywall, drywall compound and associated materials; in determining materials to be used in construction; or in estimating costs, maintaining invoices and keeping work records.

  • Must be familiar with the basics of other crafts in the building trades and capable of supervising assistants on the job.

  • Valid driver’s license required.

Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements

  • Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Occasional irregular hours or overtime may be required to complete work orders.
  • This position is considered "essential". When the University closes due to inclement weather or another emergency, this position is required to report to work to perform snow and/or ice removal or other clean-up work following severe weather or other emergencies.
  • Travel within University and occasional travel to offsite University locations using a University vehicle is required.
