Position Summary
The Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education at the University of Southern Indiana invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor of Geology to begin August 2025.
Duties/Responsibilities
The Department of Geology, Physics, and Environmental Science seeks an applicant to enhance our undergraduate programs in geology and environmental science. The successful candidate will teach between two to four courses per semester that include hydrogeology, physical geology, and an environmental seminar course on a revolving basis. Additional teaching opportunities may include a range of topics for majors and non-majors such as water resources, GIS, remote sensing, meteorology, climatology, environmental change, and subjects in the candidate’s area of expertise. With a focus on “learning by doing,” our majors are encouraged to collaborate with faculty on research projects for elective credit. It is expected that the applicant will develop a research program that includes a component of undergraduate student participation. We encourage field-based research. Local sites for potential field work include Hovey Lake, the USI Nature Preserve, Howell Wetlands, Shawnee and Hoosier National Forests, farming and urban communities, the Ohio River floodplain, and Mammoth Cave. Start-up funds and other financial support are available.
Required Knowledge and Skills
A Doctorate in Geology, Environmental Science, or closely related field is required. Doctoral candidates will be considered at the rank of Instructor if the terminal degree will be completed by the end of their first year of employment. If employment starts in August 2025, terminal degree must be completed by the end of July 2026.

The department has a dedicated groundwater monitoring lab with deep and shallow bedrock wells that are part of the NWIS network of water resources monitoring sites in Indiana. In addition, the department is supported by vehicles, instrumentation (XRF, XRD, particle-size analyzer, ovens, thin-section processing), and field equipment (ground-penetrating radar, surveying tools, Giddings soil probe, motorboat, camping supplies).
