Position Summary

Assist in the daily operations of the University Archives and Special Collections (UASC) through digitization and metadata projects, aiding researchers and visitors, and promoting the unit through outreach and engagement.

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Assist in the digitization and development of metadata for the Regional, Special, Communal Studies, and University collections, as well as transcribing and digitizing the media collections.

  • Assist the Senior Library Assistant in providing materials, reference, and instructional services in the UASC by interpreting and responding to researchers and visitors in person, via telephone, and e-mail. This includes assisting University students, faculty, and staff, as well as news media, visiting scholars, and the public.

  • Assist the University Archivist in using UASC materials to develop and prepare exhibits for the unit and in support of various civic organizations throughout the area.

  • Assist in creating content for social media by collaborating with staff and student assistants to develop engaging online material for blogs and library websites.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Working knowledge of computer and photo editing software such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite. Some experience with computers, scanners, digital cameras, or other digital equipment or software.

  • Initiative-taking, detail orientated, and the ability to accurately interpret both written and verbal instructions.

  • Effective writing and verbal communication and organizational skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills to effectively serve and communicate with a diverse group of individuals, particularly USI faculty, students, staff, and the public.

  • Adaptable, flexible and able to effectively manage change within the UASC or the David L. Rice Library.

  • The ability to work independently without frequent direct supervision.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.

  • Some knowledge of researching skills and an awareness of archival standards, the process for digitizing materials, cataloging standards, and library operations preferred.

Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements

  • This position is full time, 37.5 hours per week. Hours will be scheduled during the unit operating hours, 8:00 am – 6:00 pm Monday – Friday. Regular schedule will be coordinated with other staff members in the unit.
  • Reliable transportation is required due to occasional extended hours, evenings, or weekends. Some travel may be required.
