Position Summary

The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Grounds Maintenance Worker - Part Time.

Perform preventive maintenance and general upkeep of landscaped and turfed areas; roads and walkways; parking lots; lakes, streams, and watersheds; playing fields and recreational facilities; and minor construction related thereto.

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Performs semi-skilled landscaping, grounds maintenance, and roads maintenance tasks. Working knowledge of the care of trees, turf, and plants using grounds related machinery. This calls for the operation of trucks, tractors, and powered machines as well as hand tools.

  • Uses vehicles, tractors, machinery, and hand tools to do seeding, sodding, aerating, weeding, fertilizing, mowing, and trimming turfed and planted areas.

  • Assists a certified grounds maintenance worker in applying chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides to trees, shrubs, and turf. Plants and prunes trees and shrubs.

  • Collects and removes trash and debris.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • One year experience in grounds keeping including methods used in planting, cultivation, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs, flowers, or turf required.

  • Operation of ground maintenance equipment including motorized equipment and hand tools, and knowledge of routine equipment and methods required.

  • Valid driver’s license required.

    Some operation of computers and email software.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

Agricultural background and high mechanical aptitude preferred.

Experience with tractors and trucks.

Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements

For seasonal staff, standard work hours are Monday through Sunday, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Part-time employees may work 4 to 7.5 hours per day. As a part-time position, it is expected this position will work 28 hours a week. Hours should be consistently and consecutively scheduled, but may vary based on office needs. Occasional irregular or prolonged hours may be necessary to complete assigned responsibilities.

Position may need to work extended hours at anytime of the day or night when necessary to complete the responsibilities to remove snow and ice or to perform clean up work after severe weather or other emergencies.

This position is considered essential. When the University closes due to inclement weather or another emergency, this position is required to report to work to perform snow and/or ice removal or other clean-up work following severe weather or other emergencies.

Travel within University and occasional travel to offsite University locations using a University vehicle is required.
